Overview

Medal started with a popular video-game clipping product (Medal.tv) and has unveiled Highlight, a cross-platform desktop app that captures on-screen content and supplies that context to LLMs. Highlight runs as a floating desktop button, captures content locally without storing it, and can route context to models such as ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and Perplexity. The company is building its own ChatGPT-like assistant that could eventually run locally and is developing a local transcription app for meetings. Medal raised $13 million at a $333 million valuation from investors including Horizons Ventures, OMERS Ventures, Peak6 and Arcadia Investment Partners. The company will continue supporting Medal.tv while assigning staff to build out Highlight and an open developer platform. Medal is offering developer grants of up to $30,000 and plans to monetize Highlight via an app-store model and a potential premium subscription for local-first models. Medal.tv is a community-focused gaming platform that lets users capture, edit, and share gameplay clips across PC, mobile, and console. The company reports nearly 1 million daily active users, includes more than 1% of content creators on YouTube and Twitch, and its community generates over 2 million clips per day. Medal has expanded its tooling and cloud rendering capabilities through acquisitions of livestreaming platform Rawa.tv and clip/editing tools GifYourGame and Fuze.tv, and launched Medal 3.0 with a Sessions feature for live play, chat, and clipping. The product emphasizes connecting gamers and building shared experiences and communities. Medal plans to use fresh funding to pursue further strategic acquisitions, expand R&D, and hire key talent as it works to become a vertically integrated social network for gaming. Medal.tv provides a clipping and messaging service that enables gamers to capture and share short-form video moments across games. The company is positioning itself as a video-based social network for the gaming generation and as a marketing/discovery tool for game developers. Since launching in February, Medal.tv has amassed 5 million total users and hundreds of thousands of daily active users. The product emphasizes quick shareability over full streaming to lower friction for users and game publishers. Leadership says the $9 million investment will be used to steadily grow the business and further develop interactive social experiences. Management has declined larger offers — saying investors were willing to offer up to $20 million — to avoid taking on what they see as additional risk. Medal.tv provides an in-game clipping tool that captures the last ~15 seconds of gameplay (with optional sound) and is programmed to record only the game via API with opt-in privacy controls. The consumer service is aimed at casual players who share clips on Discord, WhatsApp and Instagram DMs, while Medal.tv also offers a Metrics product that aggregates clip-sharing data for game developers, streamers and esports organizations. The platform supports games such as Apex Legends, Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft and Oldschool Runescape. The company reports roughly 30,000 weekly users and about 15,000 daily active users; it launched last May and has been growing 5–10% weekly. Founders include CEO Pim DeWitte along with Iggy Harmsen and Josh Lipson; DeWitte previously co-founded SoulSplit. Medal.tv positions itself as enabling shareable game discovery without the complexity of streaming and providing actionable insights for gaming stakeholders.
