Overview

Meem produces power cables for iOS and Android that back up a user’s phone every time it is plugged in. Users enter a four-digit PIN and the cable immediately begins backing up essential parts of the phone while leaving the operating system and apps on the device. The cables are available in 16GB and 32GB variants, and the company says it will offer a USB-C version further down the line. Meem positions the product as a more secure, physical alternative to cloud backups. The product began as a Kickstarter project in January, and after barely meeting its goal the cables started shipping earlier this week. Ahead of Kickstarter, Meem raised £710,000 on the U.K. equity crowdfunding platform CrowdCube from 282 individual investors, valuing the company at £11 million ($16.3 million). Cables are sold via the manufacturer’s website and Amazon, and the company is led by CEO Kelly Sumner, previously CEO of Take-Two Interactive and RedOctane.
