Meeno is an AI-powered chatbot startup founded by former Tinder CEO Renate Nyborg that positions its product as a "personal mentor" rather than a romantic partner, clinical therapist, or coach. The company says it uses a "complex proprietary conversation system" trained with multiple models to provide contextual responses and that the app improves with use. Meeno collects demographic details such as age, ethnicity and sexual orientation during setup to help avoid biased conversations and has additional guardrails around self-harm and suicide. The startup is targeting Gen Z and plans an iOS-first launch on the App Store in December in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands. It is offering 12 months of Meeno premium to users who sign up before January 31, 2024. Financially, Meeno raised a $3.9 million seed round led by Sequoia and has now raised $5 million in total after an earlier pre-seed round in April. Named angel backers include Megan Jones Bell, Jim Lanzone, Eileen Burbidge, André Heinz, Peter Rojas, Balance Pilot Capital (Charles Campbell Roberts) and Joe Zadeh.
