Meltwater

San Francisco, CA, United States

Overview

Meltwater began as a media-monitoring business and has expanded into business intelligence built on in-house AI and big-data analytics. The company analyzes around 1 billion documents daily and has grown through acquisitions including DataSift. Meltwater reports an ARR of roughly €500 million and was founded in Norway but now lists San Francisco as its headquarters. It was taken private earlier this year in a deal involving private-equity firms Altor and Marlin. Management says it will continue to push hard on AI investment to stay competitive against generative-AI entrants such as OpenAI. The company is positioning itself as modern and AI-centric in its category while navigating current valuation pressures. Meltwater provides media intelligence solutions that let clients monitor traditional and social media to gain insights on trends and conversations. The company serves more than 30,000 companies around the world. It is led by Founder and CEO Jorn Lyseggen. Meltwater employs about 2,000 people across 55 offices in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. The company also operates the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST), a nonprofit organization focused on nurturing future entrepreneurs. Meltwater will use new funds to further invest in its products. Meltwater offers a media intelligence platform to monitor online conversations, extract relevant insights, and enable strategic brand management. The company serves more than 25,000 customers and operates over 50 offices on six continents. Led by founder and CEO Jorn Lyseggen, Meltwater has pursued growth through acquisitions in addition to organic expansion. Since 2009 it has acquired nine companies, including Encore HQ, a 500 Startups alumnus that provides social media alerts powered by data science. The company closed a $60M debt funding round and said it will use proceeds to continue organic growth and ramp up strategic acquisitions. The financing is intended to support both product and M&A strategy.
