Menlo Security

800 W El Camino Real, Suite 250, Mountain View, California, 94040, United States

Overview

Menlo Security focuses on protecting web and email, which the company says remain the primary attack vectors for enterprises. It pioneered a web‑isolation approach that disconnects users from content and delivers only safe visuals to prevent malware and phishing. The startup reports strong commercial momentum: net new sales were up 155% year‑over‑year, and the business is growing rapidly despite the pandemic. Menlo has about 270 employees, roughly 70 of whom joined this year, and is prioritizing more diversified recruiting channels. Customers include organizations in critical infrastructure, financial services and government, which the company says have increased security spending. Management plans to use the capital to continue independent growth and expects an IPO potentially around three years out. Menlo Security's core product is a cloud-based Isolation Secure Web Gateway that moves viewing of email attachments and web browsing off endpoints and into the cloud. The company promotes a Zero-Trust Internet approach that assumes all Internet content is malicious and isolates web and email content to stop malware, ransomware and phishing. Menlo says its global cloud protects millions of end users and isolates more than 500 million websites per day. Its customers include seven of the 10 largest banks, four of the five largest credit-card issuers, major energy and transportation companies, and the U.S. Defense Information Systems Agency. The company was named a Visionary in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for the Secure Web Gateway. Menlo plans to use new funding to expand its global sales team to meet growing demand for Internet Isolation. Menlo Security provides a web- and email-isolation platform that prevents malware by running original content in cloud containers and delivering a stripped, clean mirror to the user's browser. The company says it has more than a million users across hundreds of customers, mostly from the Global 2000, and reports zero infections to date. Menlo isolates all web pages and email in the cloud (public or private) so content never reaches the endpoint. The company currently has 125 employees and expects to grow to close to 200 by the end of 2018, concentrating hires on building a worldwide sales and marketing team. Financially, Menlo announced a $40 million Series C in this round and has now raised over $85 million to date. Management frames the Series C as an acceleration of go-to-market motion. Menlo Security offers a cloud isolation platform that runs live web pages and email in disposable cloud containers and renders a benign mirror image in the end user’s native browser. By preventing malicious content from ever reaching endpoints, the platform aims to eliminate malware at an architectural level. The approach requires no agent or browser modification, and each click spins up a new container so malware cannot persist. Menlo says the technology works for both web browsing and email links. The company emerged from stealth, was founded in 2013, and has dozens of customers. It currently employs about 50 people and hopes to double headcount within the next year; it announced a $25M Series B and has raised $35M to date. Menlo Security is a Menlo Park, California-based stealth cybersecurity startup that aims to eliminate the threat of advanced malware by introducing a new security model. Led by co-founder and CEO Amir Ben-Efraim, the company is selectively engaging in private trials of its offering. Its board of directors includes Tom Gillis, CEO of Bracket Computing and former GM of Security Technology at Cisco Systems. In conjunction with its recent funding, General Catalyst Managing Director and former VMware CTO Steve Herrod will join the company’s board. Menlo Security closed a $10.5M Series A financing to advance its product and trials. The company remains in stealth while conducting private trials and building its security model.
