Overview
Mercavus is a Berlin startup founded in 2018 that positions its platform as a 'digital trade fair' for retailers and manufacturers. The marketplace enables independent retailers to discover and purchase curated products from manufacturers across Germany, Europe and beyond to create distinctive in-store assortments. Manufacturers list products on mercavus and pay a commission for acquiring new customers; there are no fixed fees and mercavus does not charge commission on orders from a manufacturer's existing customers, while retailers use the platform for free. The company employed about 20 people at the time of the article and roughly 400 manufacturers were selling via the marketplace. Mercavus plans to expand its assortment to over 2,000 manufacturers and to have more than 10,000 active retail customers within 12 months, and to add features such as an improved design, better search and tailored product recommendations to speed and simplify transactions. Investors including Holtzbrinck Ventures, La Famiglia and Atlantic Labs have backed the company, and mercavus most recently received €3.5 million in funding.
