Overview

Mister Spex operates an online store and physical retail outlets offering contact lenses and branded glasses and sunglasses, plus its own in-house brand. The online catalogue features over 11,000 models from more than 100 brand names, including Ray-Ban, Boss Orange, Prada and Tom Ford. The company runs eleven retail stores in Germany and a network of partner opticians across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden. Founded in 2007 by Dirk Graber and Dr Mirko Caspar and based in Berlin, Mister Spex combines e-commerce with a growing brick-and-mortar presence. The company announced a €65M funding round to support expansion of its retail store portfolio and accelerate international growth. The financing includes a senior debt facility provided by an existing investor. Mister Spex is an online eyewear retailer that sells designer glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses. It positions itself as an 'online optician' with a team of opticians available by phone or email and an on-site optician shop for final production and quality control. The company operates in Germany, Austria, France, the UK, Spain and Sweden (the latter via a 2013 acquisition of Lensstore and Loveyewear). Mister Spex claims to be the largest online eyewear site in Europe. In 2013 it reported turnover of €47 million, says it has served more than one million customers, and employs more than 300 staff. The company says the fresh capital will be used to support its domestic and international growth plans. Mister Spex is a Berlin-based online optician founded in December 2007 by Dirk Graber and also led by co-managing director Mirko Caspar. The company offers an extensive range of more than 5,000 models of fashion and well-known brand prescription glasses, sunglasses and sports glasses, as well as contact lenses. It has served more than 500,000 customers and employs about 200 people. Mister Spex reported turnover of €26m in 2012. The company intends to use the new financing to increase partnerships with independent opticians and to support international expansion, primarily scaling its online shops in France, Spain and Sweden. Mister Spex is a German online eyewear retailer offering branded prescription glasses (including varifocals), sunglasses, sports glasses and contact lenses at competitive prices. Since launching in April 2008 the Berlin-based company has attracted more than 150,000 customers. In 2009 Mister Spex had a turnover of €4.5 million and in 2010 expects to exceed the €10 million mark. The company employs 90 people, including 50 permanent employees. The new capital will be used to increase brand awareness in Germany and to fuel international expansion; Mister Spex has recently opened in France.
