Overview
MongoLab is a database-as-a-service (DBaaS) provider for MongoDB created by San Francisco-based ObjectLabs. It offers cloud hosting on Amazon EC2 and Rackspace and handles replication, backups, monitoring, and uptime so development teams can avoid operational overhead. MongoLab provides web-management tools including an admin UI for creating and removing databases and for searching and editing data. It exposes a JSON REST API that lets clients connect directly to the database, enabling mobile and AJAX applications to skip building a custom intermediary server. At the time of the article MongoLab was in beta for multi-tenant database plans and as a Heroku add-on and in alpha for a dedicated server offering; developers could begin testing with a free plan. The team emphasizes MongoDB’s scalability and general-purpose capabilities as the rationale for focusing on the technology.
