Overview
Modern Fertility is a San Francisco-based women’s health company that makes fertility hormone testing accessible earlier in life. Its first product offers the same fertility hormone tests found in infertility clinics at a fraction of the traditional cost and can be taken at home or in a nearby lab. The company aims to make personalized reproductive health information available before people are ready for children. It plans to use new funding to deliver additional reproductive health products and experiences and to develop its own research to advance fertility science. Modern Fertility raised $15M in a Series A, bringing total capital raised to $22M to date. The company is led by co-founders Afton Vechery (CEO) and Carly Leahy (Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer). Modern Fertility offers an at-home finger-prick hormone test priced at $199 that reports nine hormone levels related to ovarian reserve and overall reproductive health. The company uses CLIA-certified labs, including Quest Diagnostics, to run analyses and emphasizes access and information rather than developing new laboratory instruments. In addition to test results, Modern Fertility provides educational content based on peer-reviewed studies and an optional one-on-one phone consultation with a fertility nurse (not for medical advice). The startup expects repeat customers to track changes in their "fertility curve" over time and sees potential for employers to layer the tests into wellness benefits. Co-founded by CEO Afton Vechery and Carly Leahy, Modern Fertility has an eight-person team and plans to expand hiring while exploring the best ways to reach potential customers. Financially, the company recently closed funding to support these growth plans. Co-founded in 2017 by Afton Vechery and Carly Leahy, Modern Fertility offers a personalized at-home fertility test that women can order online. Customers take the test at home and ship samples to CLIA-accredited labs. Physician-reviewed results are delivered online in five to seven days via a personalized dashboard that includes a fertility score. The company sells the test for $149 on modernfertility.com. In October 2017 it raised $1M in funding led by First Round Capital with participation from Box Group, Y Combinator and angel investors. The startup intends to use the funds to hire people in San Francisco.
