Modsy

131 Arkansas St, San Francisco, CA, 94107, United States

Overview

Modsy combines computer vision technology with human designer expertise to create complete 3D models of users' rooms from photos. Users snap pictures of a room, which Modsy stitches into a virtual model and populates with furniture from retail partners. Pricing for services ranges from $69 to $349, with a $149 single-room premium package that includes chat and swaps with designers. The company's primary monetization comes from earning a commission when users buy the furniture it recommends. Earlier this year Modsy began creating its own line of sofas and chairs and is injecting those products into its room designs and recommendations. The company recently raised capital to support moving more into physical product and to develop its personalized catalog vision. Modsy is a 3D imaging startup that reconstructs a user’s room in 360° from simple phone photos and generates redesigned spaces based on a calculated “style genome.” Users receive photo‑realistic, shoppable designs and can interact with a 3D Modsy Style Editor (in beta) to swap items and update the look. The company has automated much of the 3D rendering and design workflow, cutting the need for human intervention by about 90%, which allowed it to reduce its service price from $99 to $69. Modsy also offers a higher‑touch option with certified style advisors for $199. A major part of the company’s go‑to‑market strategy is retail partnerships — it works with more than 100 partners, including Target, West Elm, Wayfair, and a co‑branded CrateDesignStudio with Crate and Barrel. Financially, Modsy recently closed a $23M Series B and has raised $33.75M to date. Modsy converts four smartphone photos of a room into photoreal 3D renderings and VR-ready redesigns, then points users to retailers to buy the displayed items. The company soft-launched its design service in mid-2015 and currently operates a closed beta with a wait list while it readies a public launch. Behind the consumer experience Modsy uses sophisticated analysis and rendering to generate the designs. CEO and founder Shanna Tellerman says the new funding will go toward hiring engineering and design talent and ramping up marketing for the launch. The product experience includes VR renderings delivered a few days after users submit photos. The company is not yet publicly available while it prepares for launch.
