Morfo develops drone-based reforestation technology and operates tree-planting projects in tropical forests. It has launched about twenty reforestation projects in Brazil (in both the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest), as well as in French Guiana and Gabon. The company relies on drones and has a stated aim to restore 100 million hectares of forests by 2050. Morfo completed a €4M first round/seed extension, bringing total fundraising to €11M in 18 months. Investors include athlete-business angels Raphaël Varane and Antoine Dupont, and earlier backers such as Teampact Ventures and athlete investors like Nikola Karabatic and Malia Metella. With the new funding the company plans to open a laboratory in Rio to accelerate development in Brazil, strengthen R&D capacity, and optimize operational and scientific processes to enable expansion of operations. MORFO develops drones, payloads and analysis software to augment satellite imagery and enable targeted reforestation of depopulated tropical and subtropical forests. The company says its drones can process up to 50 hectares of forest imagery per day and can plant 180 seed bolls per minute, including on steep or difficult-to-access land. MORFO has completed a reforestation project in Gabon and is pursuing expansion into Latin America with plans to open a branch office mid-2023. It announced three scientific collaborations with the University of Sao Carlos (UFScar), Brazilian agronomy company EMBRAPA, and the French lab trio INRAE, IRD and CIRAD to support species testing and validation. Following its first formal fundraise, MORFO plans to expand R&D and marketing/operations and recruit 22 new employees starting next year. The company aims to test 375 forest tree species by the end of 2024 while optimising its drones, payloads and analysis software.
