Munchery

375 Alabama Street Suite 300, San Francisco, California, 94110, United States

Overview

Munchery offers ready-to-heat meals customers select through an iOS/Android app; menus typically list three to seven entrees plus desserts, kids' meals and drinks, and most meals cost $10–$15. Customers receive deliveries in roughly 20–30 minutes and heat the food in a microwave for a couple of minutes before serving. The company launched in 2010 after founders Tri Tran and Conrad Chu created the service to solve family dinner needs. Munchery is based in San Francisco and is currently available in San Francisco, New York, Seattle, and Los Angeles. The company says it will use new capital to expand into more regions, deepen service in existing cities, and diversify menu options. After the new funding, Munchery has raised a total of $117.2 million. Munchery operates a chef-driven prepared-meal delivery service: local chefs cook dishes in Munchery-run kitchens, which are delivered cold for customers to reheat at home. The service typically offers 15–20 entrees daily (priced $8–$12), plus sides, desserts, kid-friendly items and beverages. Typical San Francisco customers order two entrees and a dessert or side per order and return three to four times per month. The company reports delivering up to 5,000 orders per day and roughly 20% month-over-month growth since launch. On the supply side Munchery employs about 24 chefs in San Francisco, with roughly a dozen working in its kitchen on any given day, positioning the model as higher-earning, more flexible work for chefs. Munchery plans to expand beyond San Francisco, beginning with a state-of-the-art kitchen in Seattle and an expected launch there later this summer, led by incoming Culinary Manager Emily Moore. Munchery is a San Francisco-based startup that operates an online marketplace for home-delivered meals prepared by local professional chefs. Co-founded in 2010 by Tri Tran and Conrad Chu, the service lets customers order and receive fresh daily menus handcrafted by chefs. The company raised $4M in a Series A funding round. Backers included e.ventures, Sherpa Ventures, Menlo Ventures and Howard Behar. Munchery said it will use the funds to hire chefs and expand the marketplace geographically.
