ViaLight Communications commercializes laser-based communications technology for aerospace, enabling secure, extremely high-data-rate networking of satellites and high-altitude platforms. The company originated as a spin-off of DLR (Germany’s national centre for aeronautics and space research) in 2009 and benefited from roughly €50m of prior investment into the basic research from DLR and European and German government research funding. Its technology is positioned as a key enabling component for the next generation of telecommunications networks. ViaLight is based in Gilching, Germany and today describes itself as a medium-sized company with a team of about 40 employees. The firm completed a €3m pre-IPO financing round, indicating it is in a pre-public phase of financing.
