Overview
Nexgenia develops programmable polymers that respond to stimuli (temperature, salinity, acidity) and, with antibodies and metallic compounds, latch onto and extract target cells or molecules from solution. The reagents are currently used to separate, expand, and activate cells during immunotherapy production, and the company says the technology could extend to molecule and protein separation or diagnostics. Nexgenia has been employing its technology in immunotherapy production for the past two years and plans to expand into new applications as it identifies the best opportunities. The company was spun out of the University of Washington’s Pat Stayton Lab in 2011; Stayton remains a consultant. CEO Ron Myers, who joined in 2014 after serving as VP of strategic transaction at the Institute for Systems Biology, has overseen growth and partnerships including work with Seattle Children’s Jensen lab. The startup is based on the UW campus and employs eight people; its near-term research expansion will be funded by a new $2 million financing round.
