Overview

Notion offers a complete home awareness solution built around a smart home sensor that sends alerts to Android and iOS devices for water leaks, smoke alarms, temperature changes and doors, garages and windows opening and closing. Led by co-founder and CEO Brett Jurgens, the company has partnered with three of the top five U.S. home insurance providers to offer loss mitigation and home telematics. Notion’s products are available in the U.S. and Canada. The company plans to use new capital to expand existing partnerships, pursue relationships with property insurers, and support product development and manufacturing. Notion will also increase marketing efforts and make critical hires across engineering, data science and marketing. Since its launch in 2013 the company has raised approximately $15M in total funding. Notion makes very small, mobile-enabled sensors that can be placed on doors, toilets, liquor cabinets and other objects to monitor temperature, natural frequency, motion and other features. The company positions its product as a simple, low-cost alternative to traditional and DIY home-security systems and seeks partnerships with home-goods manufacturers to “provide full home awareness.” Notion says it has 10,000 units in the market and currently employs 11 people, with plans to expand to 25–30 over the next year. CEO Brett Jurgens said the company will use the funding to accelerate go-to-market plans and execute on larger partnerships. Insurer interest is a strategic angle: Martha Notaras of XL Innovate noted opportunity to use insurance companies as a distribution channel and to add value via early risk-detection systems. Financially, Notion has raised a total of $5.7 million to date in addition to a successful Kickstarter. Notion builds small, stick-on connected sensors that each contain seven sensors to detect movement, light changes, temperature, water, proximity and more. The devices use multiple sensing modalities — including an accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer — to triangulate events and reduce false positives. The company is shipping beta units after a Kickstarter that raised just over $280,000 and says it's on track to fulfill main backer orders in late July/early August. Notion raised a $2 million seed round to support its launch and post-Kickstarter shipments, with funds earmarked in part for sales and marketing hires. It plans integrations with Nest and IFTTT in August and intends to launch an API to foster a developer community and broaden use cases beyond security toward a "conscious home." Co-founder and CEO Brett Jurgens frames the product as aiming to prevent problems (like water leaks) and provide continuous home awareness.
