New Frontier Foods raised $1.7M in its first seed funding to commercialize its Ocean’s Halo seaweed chip. Backers included current and former executives at ConAgra, Starbucks, PepsiCo, Hershey’s (Scharffen Berger), Boulder Canyon Natural Foods and Facebook. The company also raised additional funds through CircleUp, an online platform connecting investors with consumer brands. Founded by Mike Shim, Robert Mock and Michael Buckley, New Frontier Foods is based in Burlingame, California. Its chips are baked, packed with vitamins and minerals, and contain no GMOs, trans fats, MSG, or artificial ingredients. Products are available online and at select retailers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and the company plans a national rollout over the coming months.
