Founded in 2021, Openchip develops processors and accelerators built on the open RISC-V architecture with a focus on delivering high performance while reducing energy consumption. The company operates a fabless model, concentrating on semiconductor design and outsourcing manufacturing to specialist foundries. Openchip employs around 300 professionals and targets AI and high-performance computing markets, positioning its products to lower energy requirements for data centres and supercomputing infrastructures. The recent €115 million investment from SETT is intended to accelerate the company’s chip-design roadmap and strengthen its role in the European microelectronics ecosystem. The Government of Catalonia is also set to take a stake and board representation, supporting regional industrial and technological development.
