Openera is an Ottawa-based startup that automatically moves email attachments into cloud services such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Evernote, Box, SkyDrive and enterprise systems like SharePoint. The service works with Gmail/Google Apps, Microsoft Exchange or any IMAP-connected email and exposes an open API to connect with other services behind the firewall. Rules can be set by users or centrally by IT and are highly granular—filtering by filename keywords, subject lines, sender, and more—to place files into appropriate repositories without requiring user adoption. The company says it does not read or store emails on its servers and is testing ways to attach relevant email text alongside uploaded files for corporate use cases. Openera offers online and mobile file search, with an iPhone app available and an Android app in development. The company launched a public beta in the fall, is "growing quickly," and declined to provide user metrics.
