Oppa
FRANCISCO MORATO, SAO PAULO, Brazil
Overview
Oppa sells its own branded, design-forward furniture online in Brazil, positioning itself as the “Ikea of Brazil.” Products are designed internally and the company sources new ideas from younger designers, who can submit concepts through Oppa’s website. Oppa shoulders prototyping costs for designers and produces items locally in Brazil, enabling quicker turnaround than outsourcing to Asia. The company sells primarily online to avoid high fixed retail costs but also operates pop-up stores. High import taxes in Brazil make the locally built offering more competitive versus foreign brands. Oppa was launched last year by Harvard Business School graduate Max Reichel, who previously worked as a McKinsey consultant in Brazil.
