Overview
Founded in 2023 by Doug Suttles and Jamie Steven, Orb builds on the legacy of Speedtest.net by going beyond raw bandwidth to evaluate latency, jitter, packet loss, and consistency over time. Its app generates an overall “Orb score” (0–100) that indicates connection stability and advises users on fixes; scores above 80 are considered good. Orb employs large language models to translate network diagnostics into plain-English explanations and recommendations. The software is available free on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux, and can be installed on devices such as Raspberry Pi and routers for continuous monitoring. Upcoming features include shared monitoring so a trusted party can remotely watch another user’s network, plus “recipes” that test access to specific services like Zoom, Netflix, or Google Drive. While the consumer version will stay free, Orb plans to license its analytics and alerting stack to enterprises and ISPs for revenue. To date, the company has secured $3.8 million in outside capital to fund product development and enterprise integrations.
