Oriente

Overview
Oriente builds end-to-end technology infrastructure that enables offline and online merchants and enterprise clients to launch digital credit and other financial services quickly. Its platform uses big data analytics to help merchants increase sales conversions and lower lending risk, and the company positions itself as offering "credit as a service" rather than competing with payment providers. Oriente operates consumer apps Cashalo in the Philippines and Finmas in Indonesia, which together claim about 5 million users and more than 1,000 merchants. In 2019 the company reported 700% year-over-year growth in transactions, added over 4 million new users that year, and said merchant partners saw more than a 20% increase in sales volume. Founded in 2017 by Geoff Prentice, Hubert Tai and Lawrence Chu, Oriente is focused on growth in the Philippines and Indonesia and is beta testing a consumer platform in Vietnam. It plans to expand its Pay Later digital credit feature, launch new growth-capital solutions for small businesses, and pursue enterprise partnerships to broaden its offerings. The company has reprioritized strategy and operational efficiency in response to COVID-19 to mitigate liquidity headwinds and support merchants facing revenue declines. Oriente builds digital credit and financial-product platforms serving consumers in Southeast Asia, operating Cashalo in the Philippines and Finmas in Indonesia. The company combines online services with offline touch points, deploying local salespeople in malls and stores to onboard customers and offer basket-based credit. It invests heavily in data-driven infrastructure—credit scoring, KYC and fraud-detection systems—to serve largely unbanked populations. Oriente was founded in 2017 and operates with about 1,200 employees across seven offices, including a 200-person engineering team in Shanghai. The business reports 60,000 borrowers in the Philippines, an Indonesian beta launched in August, and plans to expand into Vietnam with a goal of reaching “millions” of lenders next year. Leadership includes Skype co-founder Geoff Prentice, Hubert Tai, and investor Lawrence Chu.
