Ornikar
170 Boulevard de la Villette, Paris, Ile-de-France, 75019, France
Overview
Ornikar provides online driver education courses, a marketplace and booking system for in-person lessons and exams, and a car-insurance product (Ornikar Assurance). Its driver-education services are live in France and Spain (branded Onroad in Spain), while insurance is currently offered only in France; the company plans to expand both to more markets. The platform has reached about 1.5 million people who have taken its courses and another 2 million using its driving-school services, with 420,000 new customers in the last year. Ornikar says its internet-based offering made learning to drive about 40% cheaper on average and that the business grew roughly 30% each month last year. Ornikar Assurance launched during the pandemic and is on track to hit around 20,000 users by August after one year in market. Management frames the education and insurance businesses as complementary, with education feeding insurance customers and potential for insurance pricing to reflect course-taking to improve road safety. Ornikar operates an online marketplace that connects students and licensed driving instructors, offering flexible booking and digital administration. It competes with traditional driving schools in Europe and automates much of the admin work to reduce costs. In France, Ornikar handled 35% of driving school registrations in 2019, manages 70,000 lesson hours per month, and receives about 30,000 monthly sign-ups. The platform works with a pool of 650 instructors who are paid €15 per hour; a standard offering costs €750 for 20 hours of lessons. Ornikar says it was profitable in 2018 and very profitable in 2019 for the French market. With the new funding it plans to expand product and operations further in Germany and Spain, enter Italy and the U.K., and add car-related products such as insurance via third-party partners. Ornikar is a French startup offering online driving and road-safety tutorials as a lower-cost alternative for people learning to drive. The company’s core product is online-based driving education accessible across France. It currently has 200,000 users and operates in 250 cities in France. Ornikar has raised €10 million to support its growth. The funds will be used to bolster its position in France and to pursue international expansion, with a target to launch in its first European market outside France by the end of the year. The company plans to recruit 30 new employees this year and is considering ways to offer car insurance.
