Overview
Overwolf provides an in-game creation platform and marketplace that enables creators to build, share and monetize mods and other user-generated content inside games. Its core product lineup includes CurseForge Core, a white-label solution allowing publishers to integrate mods into existing and new titles, plus a full-service UGC platform covering content moderation, IP and related services. The company reports about 87,000 in-game creators and more than 20 million monthly users, and expects to pay out $29 million to creators this year. Overwolf plans to invest the new funding into CurseForge Core and is launching a $50 million Overwolf Creators Fund to support in-game app creators, mod authors, and studios integrating mods. The platform offers distribution and monetization tools intended to let any player become a co-creator of their favorite games. Overwolf is based in Tel Aviv and has raised over $150 million to date. Overwolf is a Tel Aviv-based platform that enables creators to build, distribute and monetize in-game mods, apps and add-ons for PC games. Its platform hosts about 30,000 creators, 90,000 mods and add-ons, and 18 million monthly users. Overwolf runs an in-mod/in-app advertising network that monetizes creator content and reported revenue growth of 300% in the past year; the company says top developers can earn up to $100,000 per month. The company acquired CurseForge from Amazon’s Twitch last year and has launched CurseForge Core, an SDK to integrate mod creation directly into games. Overwolf provides telemetry, interactive UI, analytics, installers, moderation and monetization tools, plus programs like an Author Rewards Program, developer funds and contests. While currently focused on PC, the company plans to expand to Macs, consoles and mobile platforms in the next year. Overwolf operates an open platform that hosts hundreds of game apps and in‑game services, including real‑time coaching, analytics solutions and video recording tools for popular PC and mobile games. The platform serves over 10 million monthly active players across mobile and desktop. Overwolf partners with industry names such as Intel, OP.GG, NVIDIA, Cloud9, Team Liquid, Riot Games and Logitech. The company intends to use the new funding to accelerate growth of its developer ecosystem and expand its apps and mods marketplace. Leadership is led by CEO Uri Marchand and the company is based in Tel Aviv, Israel. Shortly before this round, Intel and Overwolf announced a joint fund of over $7M to invest in apps and mods for hardcore gamers. Overwolf builds a platform that lets users create and install user-generated add-on mods and utilities for games, expanding beyond social features to become a full add-on ecosystem. Its open SDK—currently in closed beta—allows players and developers to create apps that work across supported games. Creators have built generic overlays (video capture, music player, browser, VOIP support) and game-specific tools (e.g., mortar targeting in Battlefield 2, timers for Guild Wars 2). The overlay provides access to Facebook, Twitter, Skype, MSN, web browsing, and gameplay recording without leaving the game, and publishers can add functionality without changing game code. Overwolf aims to become a “complete add-on platform,” plans an open public beta in early 2014, and says it may offer premium apps and services in the future while it focuses on attracting creators and refining the platform. Overwolf develops a social gaming client that overlays Facebook, Twitter, Skype, MSN, web browsing and gameplay recording on top of existing multiplayer online games, all without forcing players to exit their games. Game publishers can add Overwolf’s functionality without modifying game code, and the company has branded launch partners including Frogster Online Gaming, Games-Masters and GameCrush. Overwolf tested the client with 4,000 beta users and is positioning itself at the forefront of the socialization trend in gaming, saying it is signing new partners weekly. The company launched a beta of the Overwolf Client and highlights in-game sharing of screenshots, videos and social interactions as core use cases. Overwolf faces competition from in-game social features and rivals such as Trion Worlds’ Rift, Xfire, Valve’s Steam, PlayXpert and Raptr. Financially, the Tel Aviv-based company was founded in 2010, has seven employees, is funded by Israeli angel investors and has raised $940,000 to date.
