Packagd is building a series of mobile apps that combine unboxing and product-review videos with the ability to buy featured items directly in-app. The company was incubated by Kleiner Perkins and founded by KPCB general partner Eric Feng, who previously served as CTO at Hulu and Flipboard. Its first app, Unboxed, is available on the Apple App Store and curates YouTube unboxing and review videos into scheduled programming, offering six hours of live programming at launch plus replays. Packagd taps popular YouTube creators as hosts and live moderators who interact with viewers, and it enables one-click purchases via a partnership with Best Buy using Apple Pay. The company plans a second app focused on beauty and fashion in the coming months and a potential third app for toys later in the year. Kleiner Perkins provided an initial $1.5M to get the company started and Packagd raised a $6M Series A; creators keep their YouTube ad revenue, hosts earn affiliate revenue on live sales, and Packagd can sell programming time to brands.
