Parting Stone developed a proprietary solidification process that returns cremated human and pet remains as collections of smooth, stone-like objects rather than loose ashes. The company launched a beta in October 2019 after collaborating with Los Alamos National Laboratory and was founded in 2019 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Its service yields roughly 40–60 "stones" per person and is priced at $595 for human remains, $295 for dogs, and $245 for cats. Parting Stone has grown its network to more than 200 local funeral home partners and reports increased demand during COVID-19. The company plans to broaden direct-to-consumer access to over 20 million families living with ashes and expand its Santa Fe laboratory. Parting Stone projects that solidified remains could capture more than 50% of the cremated remains market by 2030.
