Overview

PhotoSonix Medical, based in Philadelphia, develops a novel at-home acne treatment that avoids antibiotics. The company is led by President Mark Schafer, PhD., and focuses on the CLENS™ (Coincident Light Energy and Non-focused ultraSound) system. CLENS combines low-level ultrasound stimulation with blue light energy to achieve an anti-bacterial effect, particularly against chronic bacterial biofilms. The CLENS System uses a proprietary combination of light and ultrasound to target the bacteria that causes acne and is an investigational device not available for commercial use in the United States. PhotoSonix received over $1.4M in funding to advance development of the CLENS device. Funding participants include Princeton BioPharma Capital Partners, Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania, and healthcare executives and entrepreneurs, and Princeton's Michael Wells will join the company's board.
