Overview

Princeton Biopharma Capital Partners, LLC is a private equity investment firm focused on investing in commercial stage healthcare companies. Our target investments include start-ups being formed around carve-outs and existing companies in need of growth capital or restructuring. Our principals have extensive track records as operators in healthcare, therefore we prefer to focus on opportunities where we can add value in addition to a capital commitment. Our investment team follows a careful, proven process that begins with the identification of underutilized assets with unrealized potential. At Princeton Biopharma Capital Partners we can leverage our capital and operating experience to work with management teams to unlock value, grow their companies and position them for a range of future strategic options.

ActiveProtective developed a belt that detects a fall and deploys a micro airbag to cushion seniors and help prevent hip fractures. The belt uses cold gas inflation rather than pyrotechnics and includes Bluetooth connectivity to trigger alerts to an emergency contact. The company says its airbag attenuates impact force twice as much as the highest rated passive hip pad and provides 200% more anatomical coverage based on International Consensus testing. Dr. Robert Buckman co‑founded the company and invented the smart belt. Preventing falls is a major healthcare priority—the article notes Medicare costs for fall injuries were more than $31 billion in 2015—and the product competes with companies such as Israel‑based Hip‑Hope and the Netherlands’ WOLK Company. Financially, ActiveProtective has raised at least $4.6 million in this Series A and $10 million in total to date. ActiveProtective developed a wearable belt that detects falls and deploys a micro airbag to cushion seniors and reduce injuries such as hip fractures. The device uses cold gas inflation rather than pyrotechnics to avoid alarming users and includes Bluetooth to trigger alerts to an emergency contact. The company plans pilot studies in collaboration with two large senior care providers and intends to expand applications into sports, high-risk occupations, and the military. ActiveProtective said it will use the new funding to support those pilots and to pursue broader applications. Leadership includes CEO and co-founder Drew Lakatos and co-founder Dr. Robert Buckman, a former trauma surgeon and the belt’s inventor. The company is based in the Philadelphia area.
