Overview

PlayWood designs and manufactures a connector-based system that lets users assemble and reconfigure furniture without screws or bolts, emphasizing low environmental impact. The company accelerated production of its Karya Desk line and ergonomic accessories to serve the surge in home workers during the COVID-19 crisis. Karya Desk and accessories (Lifty and UP) were offered in preorder with a launch price and are optimized for cable management and device placement. PlayWood reported a March surge in online orders of +201% in Europe and +365% in the USA versus the prior year, and already sells in 32 countries. The startup is running an equity crowdfunding campaign on Mamacrowd to fund scaling and broader international brand expansion. Its positioning highlights sustainability, growing sales, a strong community, and rapid product iteration in response to market changes. PlayWood raised over €400k to support team expansion and international growth. The company develops a Lego-like modular furniture system for temporary spaces such as coworking spaces, pop-up shops and events; any piece can be reassembled and recycled to create new projects. Co-founded in 2014 by Stefano Guerrieri, Carlotta Nizzoli and Mirco Bonilauri, PlayWood is based in Rome and was accelerated within LUISS ENLABS. Backers on this round included Borsa Italiana-listed LVenture Group, Barcamper Ventures (managed by Primomiglio SGR) and business angels including members of the Angel Partner Group (APG). PlayWood offers products in 18 countries via online channels and a global distribution network. The company reports over 210l “connectors” have been supplied in 20 countries across four continents, with 25% month-on-month growth and over 11k projects downloaded by more than 20k community users.
