Overview
Plum (owned by Pureplay Skin Sciences) makes vegan, toxin-free makeup, skincare and haircare products. The brand saw a sharp increase in sales during the pandemic as consumers moved online. Pureplay reported total revenue of Rs 53 crore (~$6.9M) in the 2020 financial year, up from Rs 22 crore (~$2.9M) the prior year. Plum plans to use new funding to expand across more categories and channels and to launch in new markets. Founder and CEO Shankar Prasad said the company will grow not only in core skincare but also in adjacent categories like hair care, makeup, body care and specialist care for men. Pureplay Skin Sciences Ltd sells beauty products under the Plum brand and positions itself as a 100% vegan, cruelty-free beauty company. Founded in 2013 by Shankar Prasad, Plum combines science with sustainability and claims to be India’s first 100% vegan beauty brand. Prasad studied chemical engineering and previously worked for Hindustan Unilever. The company is based in India. It recently raised a Series A from Unilever Ventures to help scale operations both online and offline. Prasad said Unilever Ventures' global presence and expertise would be of immense value in the partnership.
