Overview
Pocket provides a web app and mobile clients that allow people to save articles, videos and other web content for later viewing, with saved lists visible on phones, tablets and computers. Led by founder and CEO Nate Weiner, the service is integrated into more than 1,500 apps including Flipboard, Twitter and Zite. It reports more than 17 million registered users and is available on major devices and platforms such as iPad, iPhone, Android, Mac, Kindle Fire, Kobo, Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera and Windows. The company plans to use the new funding to scale its team and expand its reach through innovative new product offerings and partner integrations. Governance changes accompanying the raise included Dayna Grayson of NEA joining Pocket’s board of directors. Pocket (originally Read It Later) provides a cross-device service for saving web content — including articles, videos and other media — to consume later. The product is available via browser versions and native iOS and Android apps, and is integrated via its API into more than 350 third-party apps and services such as Flipboard, Twitter and Zite. The company was founded in 2007 by Nate Weiner, who bootstrapped development until early 2011, and relaunched as Pocket in April 2012 to emphasize support for media beyond text. Pocket claims it is nearing 1 million ‘saves’ per day and says it is the number one service in its space. The company plans to use the new funding to bring its save-for-later experience to more devices and platforms, expand its team, and improve services for developers and content partners. Pocket (formerly Read It Later) provides a cross-device service for saving web content—articles, videos, images and more—for later consumption. The app integrates with over 300 apps, including Flipboard, Twitter, Pulse and Zite, and offers a redesigned UI with filters for video, image and text and new organizational tools like favorites and tags. The relaunch made Pocket's Android, iOS and Kindle Fire apps free after previously being paid. The company says users have saved over 200 million items in the past five years, with nearly five items saved per second and 50% of items viewed on mobile (up from 34% in January). User growth accelerated from 2.5 million to 4.5 million in a year, and roughly 40% of saved items are non-article content; YouTube is the most popular source. Founded in August 2007 by Nathan Weiner, Pocket positions itself to give users seamless access to saved content on any device.
