Overview
Porter builds a platform-as-a-service that provides a Heroku-like developer experience while running workloads on Kubernetes in customers' own clouds. Founders Trevor Shim, Alexander Belanger and Justin Rhee developed the company through Y Combinator’s Summer 2020 batch. The platform went live in February and within six months became the sixth-fastest growing open-source platform download on GitHub. Porter already hosts roughly 100 startups and has seen usage grow four- to fivefold at this stage. The company positions itself as a successor to Heroku by delivering automation as a pure SaaS layer while customers continue to pay for underlying cloud usage and may use AWS and GCP credits. Porter plans to use new funding to increase engineering bandwidth and pursue broader adoption among startups.
