Overview

PORTL builds volumetric 4K holographic telepresence systems that allow people to appear and interact remotely as full-body projections. Its flagship Epic unit has sold roughly 100 units and is deployed in more than 20 countries for education, retail, sports, corporate communications and entertainment, with clients such as Netflix and HBO renting the technology for events. The company is preparing to release the PORTL Mini, a desktop-sized device aimed at bringing holographic communication into homes. Current use cases range from universities training healthcare workers, to stadiums hosting athlete–fan conversations, to retailers piloting virtual mannequins that match a shopper’s body shape. PORTL employs about 40 people, roughly half of whom are engineers. CEO David Nussbaum envisions Minis in every home and Epics in every conference room, airport, train station and retail location within the next decade, transforming the platform into a new broadcast channel. The startup’s innovations have earned it Reuters’ top innovation at Mobile World Congress 2021 and three CES 2022 Innovation Award shortlistings. Fresh capital will be directed toward hiring and further product development to realize this expansive vision.
