Pusher

6 New Street Square New Fetter Ln Fl 8, London, Greater London, EC4A 3AQ, United Kingdom

Overview

Pusher provides tools and cloud infrastructure that let developers add real-time functionality—such as push notifications, messaging, live content updates and collaboration features—to websites and apps. It originally offered a general-purpose realtime API and has begun rolling out dedicated offerings like Chatkit, an API and SDK for chat functionality. The company plans to continue building new developer products and to expand its presence in the U.S., including a larger West Coast office and hiring up to 30 U.S.-based sales, marketing and support staff. A significant portion of the new capital will be invested in R&D and bolstering Pusher’s London-based engineering team. Pusher currently employs about 60 people and reports more than 200,000 developers using its products, over 40 billion messages sent per day, and connections to more than eight billion devices per month. The company was founded in 2011 and operates out of London. Pusher provides real-time messaging infrastructure to push live content to web and mobile apps, used for use cases like live election results, scoring updates, maps, and notifications. The company says it has more than 100,000 developers using its service and counts customers such as The New York Times and DraftKings. Pusher built a profitable business after a modest seed round in 2011 and reports it is currently profitable. The new funding is earmarked for product development and marketing and to further build out a sales and marketing team. Pusher says it reached product-market fit organically and has begun expanding an enterprise salesforce as commercial growth accelerates. The company is London-based and focuses on making the web more real-time for connected client devices. Pusher offers a cloud-based API and hosted service that enables developers to add realtime functionality to web apps across multiple languages and platforms, including a free sandbox tier. The product reflects changes (for example in multiplayer games) in realtime to other viewers and integrates with WebSockets-era browser/server capabilities. Pusher opened its beta in March 2010 and has delivered approximately 9 billion messages to date, with over 4,000 developers signed up, including teams from Groupon, Slideshare, and Togetherville. The company is led by co-founders Max Williams and Damien Tanner. Pusher plans to introduce paid plans beginning in mid-June and will use new capital to expand platform features and drive adoption of realtime features on the web. The article reports the company raised seed funding to support those efforts.
