Calle 93 19-75, Bogotá, Bogotá D.C., 110221, Colombia
Overview
Rappi provides on-demand delivery services across Latin America. The company announced a $100 million senior guaranteed loan to support growth of its operations, refinancing, and working capital. Management said the funds will help continue its development in the region. The financing is the largest debt operation Rappi has secured since its founding in 2015. Leadership framed the transaction as the start of a long-term alliance with its lenders. The company said the deal reinforces its ability to scale strategically and consolidates confidence in its business model and regional impact. Rappi is a Colombian delivery startup founded in 2015 that operates in more than 250 cities across Latin America. Its core product is an on-demand platform that allows consumers to request a wide range of goods and services, including traditional deliveries and ultrafast deliveries in under 10 minutes. The company also provides access to financial services and other non-delivery offerings. Rappi plans to use the new funding to support recovery in the regions where it operates and to innovate with new services such as rapid delivery via micro fulfillment centers called Turbo. In 2020 Rappi raised $300 million; with the latest investment its valuation increased to $5.25 billion. The most recent round was reported as more than $500 million and was led by T. Rowe Price with participation from Baillie Gifford. Rappi is an on-demand delivery startup and super-app based in Bogotá, Colombia that also offers digital payments. Founded in 2015 and a Y Combinator graduate in 2016, the company focuses on building innovations for couriers, restaurants, retailers and start-ups. Rappi says it will continue to prioritize product and payments innovations that translate into new sources of growth. SoftBank Group and its affiliated Vision Fund confirmed a combined $1 billion investment to accelerate that growth, with each contributing $500 million. The financing brings Rappi’s total capital raised to roughly $1.2 billion and follows a prior $200 million financing that valued the company at more than $1 billion. As part of the deal, SoftBank managing director Jeffrey Housenbold will join Rappi’s board. Rappi launched in 2015 and began by delivering beverages, later expanding into meals, groceries, consumer tech and medicine. The app includes a cash withdrawal feature that allows users to pay with credit cards and receive cash from delivery agents. Rappi charges $1 per delivery and uses a fleet of motorcycles and bikes to keep costs efficient. The company graduated from Y Combinator in 2016 and attracted early U.S. venture capital interest. Rappi has raised a new round at a valuation north of $1 billion and will likely use the fresh capital to help compete with Uber Eats across Latin America.
