Overview
Roblox operates a social gaming platform that has grown to claim 31 million daily active users. The company completed a $520 million Series H raise that values it at $29.5 billion. Investors in the round included Altimeter Capital and Dragoneer Investment Group, with the Investment Group of Santa Barbara, Warner Music Group, and a number of current investors also participating. Roblox previously raised a $150 million Series G in February 2020 led by Andreessen Horowitz at a $4 billion valuation and had raised just over $335 million from investors according to Crunchbase. Leadership says the company had earlier postponed an IPO plan in 2020 and now intends to enter the public markets via a direct listing. The large late-stage raise and planned direct listing reflect strong investor interest amid pandemic-driven growth in online social gaming. Roblox operates a platform that lets developers build and publish social, often free-to-play 3D games and experiences, monetized through purchases using virtual currency Robux. The platform hosts roughly 115 million monthly players and over 2 million active developers; developer payouts were $110 million in 2019 and users spend about 1.5 billion hours per month on the service. Many top games average over 10 million monthly users, more than 10 games have exceeded 1 billion visits, and half of weekly active users come to Roblox to play with friends. The company has invested in new developer tools and a marketplace for creators to sell assets and tools to others. Roblox has been expanding internationally, including a strategic partnership with Tencent to bring its platform and coding curriculum to China, adding Chinese language support and coder camps. Financially, Roblox is cash-flow positive according to its CFO and was valued at approximately $4 billion after the latest financing. Roblox operates an Imagination Platform that enables kids and teens to imagine, create, and play together in immersive 3D worlds across phones, tablets, PCs, consoles, and VR devices. The platform hosts more than 70 million monthly active users and over 4 million young creators who have built over 40 million immersive experiences. Roblox’s creator community is on pace to earn more than $70 million this year from published experiences. The company recently introduced Roblox Education, offering free open-source curriculum, summer coding camps, and an online coding challenge to teach coding fundamentals. Roblox plans to use new funding to scale internationally by building out its global network and increasing support for international languages and currencies. Roblox operates a cross-platform social gaming platform and a creation toolkit that lets users—primarily children aged 6–16—play and build user-generated games and experiences. Its core product, Roblox Studio, enables creators to build games (more than 22 million have been created) and monetize them, with top developers earning up to $140,000 per month. The platform reports more than 48 million monthly active users, about half of whom are in the U.S., up from 30 million MAUs in December, reflecting rapid growth in 2017. Roblox is available across desktops, smartphones, game consoles and multiple virtual reality platforms. The company is expanding into physical retail with a line of toys featuring its characters sold at retailers such as Toys "R" Us. Financially, Roblox has raised just over $102 million to date, including a recent $92 million financing. ROBLOX operates a massively multi-player 3D game environment in which kids are the architects of their own worlds, using physics-based building blocks to create games and customized virtual items. The site includes a virtual economy and tools that enable children aged seven to 16 to learn coding and build elaborate game worlds. ROBLOX attracts over 5.7 million unique visitors and 650 million page views per month, and players spend 19 million hours per month on the site. The company reports strong revenue growth since its September 2006 inception, including a 75% year-over-year increase driven by subscriptions, sales of in-game virtual currency, advertising, and pre-paid cards sold at retailers. ROBLOX sells pre-paid cards at BestBuy, GameStop and Wal‑Mart as part of its monetization mix. Management intends to use new funding to expand the team and accelerate growth, and the company plans to double its workforce in 2011; David Baszucki is CEO and Founder.
