Robo Wunderkind builds a Lego-like programmable kit of modular blocks and Lego adapters that let users assemble robots combining Robo modules and Lego bricks. Its hardware lineup includes standard sensors (proximity, motion detectors, light sensors) and more advanced modules such as a tiny camera, an IR blaster and receiver, and a tiny LED screen. The company offers two apps: Robo Live for real-time robot control and Robo Code, which detects the blocks in use and lets users arrange virtual blocks to create algorithms with conditionals and loops. Robo Wunderkind positions its kits as an accessible step before moving to Arduino or Raspberry Pi. It launched on the TechCrunch Disrupt stage and sells a starter kit for $250, with advanced and professional kits to be available soon. Financially, the company previously raised just under $250,000 on Kickstarter in 2015 and recently secured $1.2 million (€1 million) in funding. Robo Wunderkind builds snap-together programmable cubes with embedded electronics that teach children algorithms and coding. Each cube contains 15 sensors and motors and can include a camera, enabling creations that react and interact with their environment. The company released a new iOS and Android app, Robo Play, which automatically imports a robot’s cube functions and configuration dashboards to help children build control systems. Early customer development has focused on collaborations with public schools in Vienna (where the team is based) and in Berkeley, California. Robo Wunderkind plans to broaden into the consumer market and expand cube features to connect with other Internet of Things devices in the future. The starter kit is priced at $199 and preorders were open through the end of the month; backers from a prior Kickstarter campaign are due to receive modules later this year after a slight delay.
