Rockley Photonics

17252 Armstrong Ave Suite E, Irvine, California, 92614, United States

Overview

Rockley Photonics develops non-invasive biomarker-monitoring technology built on a proprietary photonics chip platform and is pursuing wearable devices for remote patient monitoring. The company reports promising results on multiple biomarkers, including glucose, and expects to release those results in the second half of the year. Rockley says it remains on schedule with all programs and maintains its material customer. The firm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Q1 to undertake a comprehensive financial restructuring and emerged after 46 days. As part of that process it secured approximately $35 million of additional funding from its stakeholders, which management says has strengthened the balance sheet. Leadership emphasizes continued development, supplier and partner engagement, and plans to bring its products to market. Rockley Photonics develops silicon photonics chipsets and modules for high-volume sensor and communication products. The company closed an additional $65m round of growth funding to accelerate its product offerings, particularly integrated optical sensors. Rockley intends to use the funds to speed development and commercialization of its sensor products. Formed in 2013 and led by CEO Andrew Rickman, the company supplies integrated photonics chipsets and modules. It operates out of Oxford, UK and Pasadena, California. To date Rockley has raised over $290m to develop its silicon photonics platform, with recent investors including Credit Suisse-backed SIG-I Capital and Applied Ventures (the venture arm of Applied Materials). Rockley Photonics develops an integrated silicon photonics platform and supplies chipsets and modules for high‑volume sensor and communication products. The company targets markets including health monitoring in consumer devices, data communications and machine vision and is developing healthcare and wellness sensors and communications products for Tier‑1 customers. Rockley says its platform addresses performance and manufacturability limitations of existing photonics solutions and is positioned for hyperscale manufacture. Formed in 2013 and led by founder and CEO Dr. Andrew Rickman (founder of Bookham Technology), the company has partnered with multiple Tier‑1 customers to deliver complex optical systems. Rockley recently closed an additional $50m of growth funding and says it has raised over $225m of financing to develop its silicon photonics platform. The Sunday Times named Rockley one of the "top 10 British tech companies to watch." Rockley Photonics develops integrated optics and high-performance optical networking solutions for high-density digital systems. The company targets products for consumer electronics, autonomous vehicles, biomedical, industrial sectors, and datacenter/infrastructure networking. It operates out of Pasadena, California and Oxford, UK. Rockley said the newest financing will expand the design and production of its optical networking products. The business is led by CEO Dr. Andrew Rickman. As of the announcement, Rockley has raised a total of $100M.
