Overview

SAGES is a London-based startup developing patented biodegradable and water-soluble dyes extracted from waste streams such as onion skins, coffee grounds, blueberry, red cabbage and avocado. Its formulations are built to integrate seamlessly with existing dyeing processes, offering an alternative to petroleum- and coal-tar-derived synthetic dyes that are responsible for roughly 20 % of global wastewater. Internal tests show the dyes meet industry standards for UV and wash fastness on both cellulose and protein fibres. Early traction includes custom colour development for Patrick McDowell’s London Fashion Week collection, surface projects with James Burleigh, and fibre-dyeing trials with Bananatex and Story Mfg. The company recently secured £190,000, its first reported outside capital, to transition from lab-scale innovation to pilot production. Funds will be directed toward expanding the dye palette, refining production systems and deepening partnerships with manufacturers and designers. Founded by Emily Taylor and Alice Simpson, SAGES aims to embed sustainable colour solutions throughout global textile supply chains.
