SemiQon

3 Tietotie, Espoo, 02150, Finland

Overview

SemiQon is commercialising a cryogenic complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) chip that preserves full CMOS functionality at extremely low temperatures. The chip is aimed at solving the energy consumption and heat-dissipation bottlenecks that limit current quantum computers, with the company projecting a 30% reduction in read-out infrastructure cost and volume in the short term and more than a tenfold reduction over time. By shrinking cooling requirements, the technology could also cut global data-centre and supercomputer cooling expenses by an estimated $20–30 billion annually. Originating from research at VTT, SemiQon manufactures the chips at the European pilot line foundry Micronova and plans future production at the Kvanttinova hub. The solution recently won first prize in the “Impact Expected” category of the 2025 EARTO Awards. Financially, SemiQon has secured a €2.5 million non-dilutive grant from the European Innovation Council and has €15 million in earmarked equity funding to accelerate commercialisation and scaling.
