Overview
Sesame is a two-sided online medical care marketplace that lets patients research, shop for, and book physicians on a pay-per-visit basis. The platform offers virtual and, in some locales, in-person care with fixed, upfront prices and claims to cover primary care, acute consults, chronic care management, roughly 40 specialties, dentistry, labs and imaging. It hosts over 2,500 healthcare providers across all 50 states and, since going live in mid-2020, has served in excess of 150,000 patients. Sesame says the average price paid on its marketplace is about $40, with some visits as low as $25, and that just over 60% of patients have some form of insurance. The company monetizes by charging a percentage of each visit and reports growth of roughly 25% month-over-month and revenue growth of nearly 500% year-over-year. CEO and co-founder David Goldhill frames the service as "half-price, whole quality" care, emphasizing pricing transparency and reduced administrative burden for physicians. Sesame is piloting a membership product, SesamePlus, currently in beta and planned for general availability, offering discounted visits for a $99 annual or $10.99 monthly fee. Sesame operates a dynamic direct-pay healthcare marketplace that enables patients to find, book, and pay doctors directly for telehealth, prescriptions, and in-person visits. The company says it supports over 1,000 providers treating patients across all 50 states and facilitates thousands of in-person and telehealth visits every month. Sesame reports its business has grown 25x in the past year. The company plans to use the new funding to strengthen its full-scope marketplace and expand its nationwide telehealth offerings and in-person care. Sesame is launching prescription medication delivery this month to give cash-pay patients access to affordable medication. Since founding in 2019, Sesame has raised just under $50 million in total capital.
