Sharetribe offers a Software-as-a-Service platform that handles the under-the-hood functionality needed to build peer-to-peer marketplaces for goods and services. The platform includes a built-in payment system that marketplace operators can use to charge transaction fees, while Sharetribe itself charges subscription tiers based on the number of users. The company does not take a cut of transactions and its code is open source so customers can migrate off the platform if they outgrow it. Sharetribe aims to make it easy and affordable for non-technical founders to launch marketplace businesses worldwide. During a private beta running since August 2013, marketplaces have been created in 15 countries and there are "thousands of people" on the waiting list for the public launch; the company declined to disclose total marketplaces or transaction volumes.
