Shuddle is an app-based car service that provides prebooked transportation for children and elderly passengers. The platform requires a $9 monthly membership that covers driver training and screening, and charges per-ride fees typically about 15% higher than UberX to compensate drivers. Drivers undergo extra training plus two sets of background and reference checks, and the company carries specialized insurance tailored to minors and seniors. Since exiting beta in October 2014 the service has operated only in the Bay Area, where ride volume has grown fivefold and the company now counts roughly 200 drivers. Shuddle is adding drivers weekly and plans to expand into new cities over the coming months, and is exploring carpooling-style features while not yet offering on-demand rides. Total capital raised to date is $12 million, including the recent $9.6 million Series A.
