Overview

Signal Media provides an AI-driven media monitoring and B2B market intelligence product that analyzes more than 2.8M online, print, television, radio and regulatory sources, translated in real time in over 100 languages across 200 markets. Its platform supplies customized, contextual overviews of public conversation, market movements and issues for clients, and it has more than 200 customers including Allen & Overy, Amnesty International and British Airways. The company has almost 100 employees, says it has more than quadrupled revenues since its £5.8M Series A and reported ~300% year-on-year growth in 2017–18, but is not yet profitable as it prioritizes growth. Signal plans to broaden beyond PR and communications into risk management (tax and compliance), financial and legal services business development, regulatory tracking and automated research outputs such as biographies and two-page company summaries. It is training its AI to surface contextual “unknown unknowns,” improve sentiment and deliver automated summaries and decision-support features. The firm is also expanding further into the US market, where about a fifth of revenue currently comes from and where it is building out a team. Signal Media offers an AI-driven media monitoring platform that assesses source trustworthiness and relevance to help businesses sift news in real time. The product aggregates content from 2.7 million websites, 67,000 print feeds and 300 broadcast channels, and can auto-translate titles from more than 90 countries in over 40 languages. Its initial customers are primarily in financial services, legal and professional services, and it focuses on PR and communications workflows. The company says its AI can be trained to spot events such as job moves, M&A activity, or emerging reputational threats. Signal is developing additional tools to monitor real-time changes to tax and financial regulation. The startup is led by co-founder and CEO David Benigson and co-founder Dr. Miguel Martinez, who serves as Head of Research after joining via a Knowledge Transfer Partnership. Signal Media builds a text-analysis platform that crawls news, blogs, social networks and other unstructured sources to deliver market intelligence and media monitoring. The platform uses NLP and machine-learning features—topic classification, entity recognition and summarization—to filter, de-duplicate and extract salient facts from large volumes of text. It processes more than 75,000 online news sources, 3.5 million blogs and roughly 100 social networks. Signal launched its commercial service about six months after nearly three years of development and currently has around five customers, including Jamie Oliver and the Centre for Policy Studies, plus executive search and media firms. The company is initially focused on the U.K. market but sees potential for international expansion. Recent funding will be used to hire data scientists and engineers and to ramp up sales as it grows.
