Overview
Skytree develops proprietary direct air capture (DAC) technology and sells modular units (Skytree Cumulus) that capture CO2 from ambient air and store it in pressurised buffer tanks for reuse. The company targets controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) customers and says its facilities can boost agricultural yields by 20–30% versus conventional farming. The DAC technology was developed over a decade of practical research and was originally designed for use on the International Space Station. Skytree plans to ship its first DAC units to customers in Europe and North America early next year and aims to accelerate product development and commercialisation. In June 2023 the company closed a $6M seed round led by Horticoop and Yield Lab Europe and has stated a longer-term goal of capturing 10 Mt of CO2 by 2030. Financially, Skytree received significant support in 2023 and has attracted grant and seed funding to scale deployment. Skytree commercializes modular CO2 scrubbers derived from life‑support technology that served on the International Space Station. Its core product uses conventional sorbents to absorb CO2 and release it when heated; the company says it has optimized the system to reduce electricity requirements. Skytree initially developed a product for electric-vehicle cabins but pivoted to greenhouses, where confined atmospheres and existing geothermal infrastructure enable better product-market fit. The boxes can scrub CO2 at night, store it, and release it during the day to boost plant growth, and in 70–80% of cases Skytree reports its scrubbers are cheaper than buying CO2 from fossil-fuel sources. The company can integrate with greenhouse geothermal systems to further cut energy use. Skytree has MOUs and verbal agreements for its first 300 units and aims to scale toward a 10 million metric ton CO2 removal target by 2030. Revenue is expected from equipment sales and maintenance contracts as the company brings its first products to market.
