Snips builds a private-by-design voice platform that runs on-device using automated speech recognition to enable offline voice interactions for connected devices. The company officially launched its Voice Platform, which supports five languages at launch and transcribes speech into text for AI interpretation. Snips says the platform can generate large amounts of human-like data while maintaining user privacy and avoiding cloud dependence. It already has over 1,000 registered users on its platform and is working with hardware partners including Lemon California to integrate offline voice commands into products. The startup operates from Paris and New York City. Prior funding brings the company to $21 million raised over the past two years. Snips is a French startup building an artificial intelligence layer for smartphones that surfaces relevant information and apps based on context. It plans to release a new Android home screen and an iPhone app that can act as an intelligent app launcher and show users relevant apps and information when and where needed. The product relies on gathering data such as location and calendar entries and using deep-linking to, for example, prefill Citymapper with a meeting location. The company has a team of data scientists and PhDs and previously experimented with smart-city projects including Tranquilien, which predicts train busyness, and a parking-spot prediction service. Snips raised a $6.3M (€5.6M) seed round led by The Hive to support its product development. It faces competition from platform players including Apple’s iOS 9 app suggestions and Google Now.
