SockMonkey Studios, founded in 2013, is a Middlesbrough-based, award-winning games developer that has worked on console and PC ports such as Deliver Us The Moon and Prison Architect. The studio is bringing its first original game, Fish Tanks, to market this summer on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC and mobile. SockMonkey employed 18 staff at the time of the article and reported a 50% headcount increase in 2019. The company plans a phased growth programme to create a dozen new jobs by the end of the year and to grow headcount to about 50 by 2021. The investment is intended to help the studio transition from work-for-hire and ports to original IP and capture ongoing royalties. Mercia is also providing practical support: Ron Ashtiani, Mercia’s games expert and former CEO of Atomhawk, has been appointed Chair to help scale the business.
