Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund
Steel City House, West Street, Sheffield, S1 2GQ, United Kingdom
Overview
Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund (NPIF) is an initiative launched by the government-owned British Business Bank. It is a key part of the government’s ‘Northern Powerhouse’ vision, which aims to end the historic North / South divide and create economic prosperity in the North of England on par with London and the South East. The government firmly believes that SMEs form the foundation of the region’s future growth. NPIF therefore aims to nurture regional entrepreneurship by providing investment and support for small and medium businesses between 2016 and 2021. NPIF's funding will support new and growing SMEs, create jobs and encourage and attract additional private sector investment.

- Xentra
Led · Seed · Jul 2026
Xentra delivers managed cybersecurity and digital protection services through a subscription-based model that combines technology, managed services and specialist expertise. Its core packaged offering includes STAX bundles and a proprietary customer portal to simplify procurement and management of cybersecurity, compliance and safeguarding tools. The company aims to help organisations strengthen digital resilience, reduce complexity and maintain continuous protection against evolving threats. Xentra was founded in 2021 as Fairtech Solutions and rebranded after an acquisition and strategic restructuring. It has quadrupled ARR over the past two years and serves a customer base of more than 90 clients. The company plans to invest the new funding in people, technology, customer experience, sales and marketing, and further development and expansion of its STAX product suite.
- AssetCool
Participated · Series A · Jul 2025
AssetCool develops a proprietary coating platform and robotic deployment system that applies advanced nanomaterial coatings to new and existing overhead conductors. Its CapacityN robotic platform can rapidly apply a range of functional coatings to address constraints such as limited capacity, noise, and corrosion while also collecting physical data for AI-driven analysis. AssetCool says its coatings can increase line capacity by up to 30% and be up to 20 times cheaper than conventional upgrades, with much faster deployment. The company has already deployed its technology with multiple utilities worldwide and plans to scale its robotics and coatings globally. Management frames the business as improving the physical layer of the grid without rebuilding it, combining materials science, robotics, and data services. The company recently closed a funding round to support that global scaling and ongoing product development. AssetCool is a UK-based climate tech company developing a durable photonic materials-based coating designed to cool overhead power lines, reducing energy losses, costs and emissions. Its core product can be retrofitted to existing electricity networks and the company has developed in-situ application techniques including aerial coating robots. AssetCool says the coating increases the capacity and efficiency of transmission networks and can help facilitate electrification. The company was founded by Dr. Niall Coogan (Managing Director) and Barry Johnston and has links to the Universities of Manchester and Leeds. AssetCool has raised a £2.25 million Series A to support commercial rollout and further development of its retrofit techniques for power stations. The funding is intended to accelerate deployment of its photonic coating and related application technology.
- Atomik-AM
Led · Equity · May 2025
Atomik-AM is a Liverpool-based manufacturing company that transforms aluminum metal waste into more durable products. Its process also recycles excess waste into energy. The company is developing and patenting a series of new manufacturing products, including a Universal Binder — a glue used specifically in 3D metal printing. The Universal Binder is aimed at helping companies in the automotive, aerospace and energy sectors produce key parts at scale. Atomik-AM plans to use recent funding to expand operations and broaden its business reach. The company is led by its CEO and founder.
- Netacea
Led · Equity · Dec 2024
Netacea provides a platform that detects and prevents bot attacks, warning customers when attacks are imminent and using AI-driven intent-based analytics. Its open-source BLADE framework maps every stage of an attack and is being adopted as a standard model by business security teams. The company is developing products and services to cover all stages of the attack process. Netacea plans to further extend its AI roadmap, expand its product range and continue growing. Founded in 2022 as a spin-out from Intechnica Holdings, the company is based in Manchester. It employs around 60 staff and counts some of the world’s largest online retailers and major brands among its clients. Netacea provides agentless bot detection and mitigation for websites, mobile apps and APIs, avoiding code insertion on customers' pages so protections remain hidden from attackers. The platform is focused on bot management as that segment is expected to outgrow traditional WAF solutions. Netacea has grown its U.S. presence in recent months and counts customers such as Shutterstock, ClearScore, William Hill and All Saints. Jeremy Gidlow is CEO and co‑founder. The company plans to use new capital to expand its presence in the U.K. and the U.S., where it sees significant growth opportunity. The raise is positioned against a Forrester‑cited market expansion in application security and bot management.
- Exciting Instruments
Participated · Seed · Nov 2024
Exciting Instruments is a University of Sheffield health‑tech spinout founded in 2021 that commercialises a benchtop single‑molecule fluorescence spectroscopy platform called EI‑FLEX. The EI‑FLEX is an affordable, two‑colour system enabling smFRET and FCS experiments at the benchtop without optical tables or dark rooms, with real‑time data visualisation, cloud connectivity, high‑throughput processing and automation. The platform is positioned to broaden access to single‑molecule studies across pharma, healthcare and industrial research, supporting protein and nucleic acid interaction studies and drug discovery workflows. The company plans to use the new funding to develop commercial partnerships, expand its team, and evolve its products. Exciting Instruments emphasises practical workflows and automation to reduce specialist infrastructure requirements and increase throughput for life‑science labs. Exciting Instruments builds the EI-FLEX, a relatively low-cost benchtop instrument combined with advanced software to perform single-molecule spectroscopy. The device is intended to replace more complex and costly existing technology and broaden access to single-molecule measurements in biophysics and life-science labs. The company says the technique could enable new discoveries across biophysics, drug development and diagnostics and aims to make the instrument a standard tool in biophysics labs. Exciting Instruments was established in August 2021 as a spinout from the University of Sheffield and is a joint venture with Bulldozer Limited, which provides digital, commercial and financial support. Robert Bell of Bulldozer has joined the board; Chris Sellars of Hentons Corporate Finance supported the raise. The company has won two orders within its first year and plans further sales worldwide.
