Overview
The Cambridge Angels are a group of high-net worth investors who have proven experience as successful entrepreneurs in internet, software, technology and bio-technology. Members invest in and mentor high quality start-up and early-stage companies in these sectors in the Cambridge (UK) area and throughout the UK. Typical funding requirements that the Cambridge Angels meet are in the range of £50,000 to £500,000 - although it is worth noting that several of their portfolio companies have received more than £1m in funding from their Members over several funding rounds. Their Members have been responsible for a large number of the “Cambridge Phenomenon” success stories over recent years. Therefore, in addition to providing funding for early-stage companies, the Cambridge Angels also offer start-ups the considerable benefit of a wide range of expertise, contacts and directly relevant experience in establishing and growing entrepreneurial businesses successfully.

- Singular Photonics
Participated · Equity · Aug 2026
Singular Photonics is an Edinburgh-based fabless semiconductor spinout from the University of Edinburgh built on research led by Professor Robert Henderson. The company develops image sensors based on single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) technology that can detect and precisely time individual photons, enabling high-sensitivity and precise-timing imaging. Singular Photonics combines SPAD detectors with on-chip computation so data can be processed at the point of detection, reducing external data transfer and enabling real-time analysis. It currently offers two commercially available product families, Andarta and Sirona. The company's target application areas include machine vision, industrial automation, physical AI, scientific research and medical imaging. Recent financing of $2.15M is intended to expand engineering capacity and accelerate development and product introductions.
- Phast
Participated · Seed · Jul 2026
Phast develops sustainable, high-performance polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymers intended for medical applications. The company plans to expand R&D, grow its team, advance product development, and accelerate commercialisation of its next-generation PHA-based medical products. To support those efforts, Phast secured a £1 million pre-seed funding package combining £500,000 in equity from an angel round led by Sheffield Angels with participation from Cambridge Angels and Mandashi, matched by a £500,000 Innovate UK Investor Partnership Grant. The funding increases the company’s runway for development and early commercial activities. Phast is headquartered in Sheffield. The article did not disclose revenue, users, or prior financing history.
- Orthofuse
Participated · Seed · Feb 2026
Orthofuse designs and manufactures next-generation orthopaedic implants using advanced additive manufacturing and novel implant architectures. The company focuses on making procedures more reversible in complex cases, cutting the number of surgical steps while maintaining strong fixation. Its technology is intended to make orthopaedic surgeries safer, more efficient, and to deliver better patient outcomes. Led by CEO and Co-Founder James Scott, Orthofuse is currently refining its product for regulatory approval and early-stage clinical evaluations. The newly raised seed capital will fund further technical development, regulatory readiness, and partnership building. Although still pre-revenue, the company has attracted multiple investor groups, signaling confidence in its approach.
- xWatts
Participated · Seed · Feb 2026
xWatts is a London-based software company that builds an AI-driven energy management platform for large, complex real-estate portfolios. Unlike solutions that merely analyse data, its software connects directly to on-site systems—such as HVAC, solar arrays, and combined heat-and-power units—to model facilities in real time and automatically optimise both generation and demand. The technology has already been deployed in healthcare, education and manufacturing facilities, where it has delivered reductions in energy use, operating costs and carbon emissions. Target customers are owners and operators of non-domestic buildings across Europe, a segment with high energy intensity and rising decarbonisation pressure. The company’s vision is to decarbonise these assets in an intelligent, automated and scalable way. Proceeds from its latest £1.6 million seed round will fund further product development and expansion in key European markets. No revenue or user figures were disclosed, but the company positions its platform as a mission-critical control layer rather than a passive analytics tool.
- AVIEL Intelligence
Participated · Seed · Apr 2025
AVIEL Intelligence has developed a proprietary intelligence engine that actively identifies scam networks and enables PSPs and banks to take real-time action to block fraud. The company deploys AI personas that engage scammers on digital platforms and extract information as conversations move to encrypted environments like WhatsApp, surfacing which accounts are being used in scams. AVIEL’s platform is live and positioned to give receiving banks critical insights to understand and mitigate fraud risk. The business was founded by former Google employees and cybersecurity experts and emerged from stealth with this product already operational. Market context includes a surge in UK fraud—Authorised Push Payment (APP) losses nearing £500M—and new Payment Systems Regulator rules shifting reimbursement liability to PSPs, increasing demand for preventative solutions. The company plans to use the funding to expand across the UK and internationally, accelerate product development, increase detection speed and accuracy, broaden the scope of scams covered, and scale intelligence delivery. The round provides initial financial support via a Pre-Seed financing to fund these growth priorities.
