Soil IQ makes a solar-powered wireless probe that streams soil nutrient content, pH, temperature, moisture and light data to a paired app and analytics platform. The analytics platform provides recommendations on seed selection, fertilization and watering and can send SMS or Twitter alerts when plants need attention. The probe works with soil-based and hydroponic gardens and the company plans to retail the device for about $49 to consumers and larger partners. Business models include hardware sales, licensing the dataset if usage scales, and affiliate revenue from related products like organic fertilizer and seeds. The company has a design partnership with Yves Behar to help shape the product and app. Soil IQ has raised about $200,000 from Orange Telecom and other angel investors.
