Overview
SPhotonix is developing 5D optical memory crystals and high-precision fused-silica optics based on its FemtoEtch™ technology, originally invented by Chief Scientific Officer Prof. Peter Kazansky over two decades of research. The company’s data-storage solution can encode vast datasets—such as the full human genome and the entire Wikipedia—into durable, millimetre-scale glass, targeting cloud, cold and archival storage markets. Its optics offerings already serve microscopy, high-power lasers, aerospace and semiconductor manufacturing. Management recently opened a Swiss R&D lab that is fully operational and expanding its team of photonics experts. With global data generation up 133 % in four years and the cold storage market projected to exceed $400 billion by 2030, SPhotonix aims to guide its technology through final TRL stages and into earth- and space-borne data centres. The company has attracted interest from hyperscalers and corporate partners, with partnership announcements reportedly forthcoming. Financially, SPhotonix has completed an oversubscribed $4.5 million pre-seed round, its first external capital, to fund rapid hiring and commercial execution.
